در مارس ۲۰۱۶، حساب ایمیل شخصی جان پودستا، مدیر تبلیغات انتخاباتی هیلاری کلینتون، در یک حمله فیشینگ هک شد. ویکی لیکس ایمیل‌های خود را در نوامبر ۲۰۱۶ منتشر کرد. طرفداران نظریه توطئه Pizzagate ادعا کردند که نامه‌های ایمیل حاوی پیام‌های رمزگذاری شده‌ای هستند که چندین رستوران آمریکایی و مقامات عالی‌رتبه حزب دموکرات را به یک قاچاق قاچاق انسان و حلقه جنسی کودک متصل می‌کند. یکی از مؤسساتی که گفته می‌شود درگیر آن بوده رستوران زنجیره ای پینگ پنگ و پیتزا فروشی در واشینگتن دی سی است[۱][۲]
اعضای روزنامه نگاران راست افراطی، محافظه کار و افراد دیگری که تحت پیگرد قانونی قرار دادن کلینتون بر روی نامه‌های ایمیل کلینتون بودند، این تئوری توطئه را در رسانه‌های اجتماعی مانند 4chan، 8chan و Twitter منتشر کردند.[۳] تحت تأثیر آن، مردی از کارولینای شمالی با یک تفنگ وارد رستوران شد و شروع به شلیک کرد.[۴] صاحبان رستوران و کارکنان نیز از جانب نظریه پردازان توطئه تهدید به مرگ کردند.[۵]
در تاریخ ۳۰ اکتبر ۲۰۱۶، یک حساب کاربری توییتر که محتوای سوپرماسیستی سفید را منتشر کرده بود و توسط یک وکیل نیویورک اداره می‌شد، ارائه کرد ادعا کرد که اداره پلیس شهر نیویورک (NYPD) یک حلقه پدوفیلی را کشف کرده‌است که هنگام جستجو از طریق اعضای حزب دموکرات مرتبط است. طرفداران این تئوری، ادعا می‌کردند که ایمیل‌ها شامل کلمات کد برای پدوفیلی و قاچاق انسان بودند.[۶][۷] طرفداران همچنین ادعا کردند که رستوران زنجیره ای پینگ پونگ محلی برای سوء استفاده از آیین‌های شیطان‌پرستی است.[۸]
