تمساح آفریقایی(نام علمی:Afrikans Crocodylinae)نام زیرگونه‌ای از تمساح است که شامل چندین گونه مختلف می شود.این تمساح در جنگل های معتدل و نیمه خشک جنوب‌غربی آفریقا و شمال غربی آفریقا زندگی می کند و از جانوران آفریقایی چون غزال، گورخر، زرافه، اسب آبی، فیل و کرگدن سیاه تغذیه و با پستانداران شکارچی چون شیر آفریقایی، یوزپلنگ شمال‌غربی آفریقا و کفتار خالدار رقابت می کند.این جانوران شکارچی بر خلاف جثه بزرگی که دارند، زیاد غذا نمی خورند و می توانند حتی با نیم کیلوگرم گوشت هم سیر شوند. آنها شب‌ها در اطراف رودخانه به جستجوی غذا می پردازند و از ماهی‌ها، پرندگان و پستانداران اطراف رودخانه تغذیه می‌کنند و بعد از گرفتن شکار، او را با آرواره‌های قوی خود فشار داده و شکارش رایا به داخل آب می برند یا این که در کنار رودخانه مخفی می کنند.
