شیر آفریقایی عنوانی است که برای اشاره به زیرگونه‌های شیر ساکن در آفریقای سیاه یعنی شیر ترانسفال، شیر ماسای و شیر کاتانگا استفاده می‌شود. تمام زیرگونه‌های نام برده نسبت به شیر آسیایی از اندازه و وزن بیشتری برخوردارند و جنس نرشان نسبت به شیرهای نر آسیایی یال پرپشت‌تری دارد. شیر آفریقایی بزرگ‌ترین پستاندار گوشت‌خوار ساکن در قاره آفریقا و سومین گربه بزرگ جهان پس از ببر سیبری و ببر بنگال است. شیرهای آفریقایی شکارچی رأس هرم غذایی در زیستگاه خود محسوب می‌شوند و گیاه‌خواران بزرگی مانند گورخر و کل یالدار تغذیه می‌کنند.
